It is unimaginable for the world to exist without literature. Literature is any form of written materials, written letters. It plays a vital role in the world's history. Without literature, things in the past are difficult to be handed down to the latest generation. Word of mouth cannot do it alone. With the aid of written works, things can be more specific and reliable. There are just things to that it is better to be written than to a passing through conversation. In addition without Literature, the world would be very boring. No dramatic novels, romantic poems, and informative essays can make your life pretty dull. Literature is divided in to two genres, prose and poetry.

Poetry deals more in the artistic side of literature. There is no rule in poetry since everyone has his or her poetic licence. Though there are standard set to measure poetry and to classify it to its right sub-genre. Poetry can be in a form of short poems, sonnets, haiku, ode, lyric, ballad, couplets, quatrain, etc. The world famous poets are Maya Angelo, Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe, etc. Anyone can be a poet too. Prose, on the other hand, has a touch of artistry but it has structures and tied down with grammar. Short stories, novels, essays, and etc. are the output of prose. Since every written works are literature and poetry is the artistic side of it, prose on the other hand is any written work that does not falls on poetry. Encyclopaedia, dictionaries, atlas and reference books are a form of literature but it does not exhibit the artistic side of it. Prose is usually publicized in a form of newspaper, magazines, pocketbooks, self-help books and etc. Charles Dickens and Geoffrey Chaucer are the world's famous authors of prose.

Nowadays, the top names that dominate the literature world are Dan Brown, Jodi Piccoult, Nicholas Sparks, Paolo Coelho and a whole lot of more. At times people prefer to write poems thinking that, they have more freedom in writing poetry than prose. But as a matter of fact, writing a prose is easy easier. Any bottled up emotion about a friend, poems, funny experiences, and just anything under the sun. It can be written down into a form of essay. While there are some authors who only focus on either of the two genres, there are authors that have famous masterpieces in two genres. William Shakespeare is the world famous author and poet. Some even consider him as the father of modern literature.
